1. What and where are the Cayman Islands?

The Caymans, a British Crown Colony, consists of three islands- Grand Cayman, Cayman Brac and Little Cayman - that are located in the western Caribbean, 480 miles south of Miami.

2. Do I need any special documents once I get there?

Citizens of the United States, Britain and Canada need to provide either a passport or a proof of citizenship such as a birth certificate or valid driver's license, along with an outbound ticket, in order to gain entry to the Cayman Islands. Grand Cayman is the largest, occupying 76 square miles, while the other two are no bigger than 15 square miles each.

3. Will I suffer from any jet lag?

That of course depends on where you are coming from, but the Caymans are in the Eastern Standard time zone.

4.What kind of weather should I expect?

The Links at SafehavenThe average temperature in the winter is 75 degrees Farhenheit, while it rises to an average of 85 degrees in the summer. December through April is usually considered the most temperate because the humidity is the lowest. The summer is the rainiest time of year.

5. What is the official language and currency?

English is the official language and the Cayman Islands dollar is the official currency. The exchange rate is CI$1 = US$1.25. Most stores and restaurants quote prices in both currencies, and American dollars are accepted everywhere.

6. Besides golf, what are some worthwhile activities?

The Caymans have long been touted as providing vacationers with the best beaches as well as superb snorkeling and scuba diving venues. There is plenty of room to kick back and relax, while there are also historic sites worth visiting, trails to be scaled and sting rays to swim with.

Transportation Information

The Cayman Islands are a mere 70-minute flight from Miami, and direct flights are available from Florida' southern tip to Owens Roberts International Airport on Grand Cayman via Cayman Airways. And with well over 100 flights into the airport every week, getting to the region from across the United States is never a problem. USAir provides direct service from Charlotte and Philadelphia, Northwest flies direct from Detroit in the spring, Delta offers direct flights from New York and Atlanta, while Continental flies non-stop from Newark. And Island Air is the perfect carrier for traversing the Caribbean once on Grand Cayman.

You must be 21 to rent a car in the Caymans, and you also must obtain a temporary license for US$7.50. Various models of rental cars are available, with jeeps being the most popular. Mopeds and scooters are also available.
